SOFT AND WARM COTTON-BAMBOO PONCHOS
These awesome ponchos are soft and warm, and feature a half fringe on the front and on the opposite side on the back. They are made with cotton and bamboo yarn, hand-dyed with natural dyes. Bamboo yarn is soft and breathable with a great drape and luster. Additionally, bamboo is a renewable resource - it is fast growing and the leaves can be harvested without killing the plant.
Paying fair trade prices, we ordered these from the Asocciacion Ixoq Ajkeem weaving cooperative in San Juan La Laguna on the shore of Lake Attitlan. Ixoq Ajkeem means "woman weaver" in T'zutujil, one of the Maya dialects found in the lake region. And weaving women they are; using skills and techniques passed down through generations, the women work on back strap looms, working in between mealtimes and whenever they can, spending hours and hours at the loom each day.
The women were not going to be able to fill our order in time, but said: "No tenga pena" - don't worry. They recruited other women from the town who worked into the night every day for a week creating these ponchos for Oh My Maya, earning some unexpected and neededincome that week.
